Reader Matt Briggs wrote me asking about how to control a bunch of Korean kids who were presented as geniuses who could read while blindfolded, and who would be be "tested" — which means put on a show — soon in his area. I suggested:

Have they agreed to use envelopes? I'm sure they haven't.
You HAVE TO work within their limits, as they state them; you can't ask a swimmer to fly.....
Just hold a piece of paper under their chins, and bring the colored paper beneath that. They won't be able to see....

Matt responded:

Thanks very much for the tips, but I must report that the experiment happened on Monday night (about 30+ showed; many people from MIT and Harvard: I don't have a list, unfortunately), and was a failure in the sense that the kids did no better than chance. In fact, it was worse than that. I can also say that the whole thing is no longer confidential and can openly be reported.

The Korean team actually agreed to use the envelopes, and even announced that they had practiced with them for two weeks before the experiment. They were claiming hit rates of 80-90% with the envelopes during these two weeks. I have no clear idea how they did these unsupervised trials.

Matt doesn't say here what the target pool was, playing cards or letter cards, though from what comes later, I believe they were just colored cards Leaves us a bit unable to give an analysis....! Continuing....

I had the exact same materials for the experiment with the exception that I glue-sticked the envelopes shut instead of just closing them. They also agree to this beforehand. Actually, my two sons (back in New York) glued and stuffed the numbered envelopes using a randomization sheet that was unknown to me, so that nobody in the room at the time of the experiment, including me, knew the order of the cards. I carried a separate sealed envelope that contained the list so that I could check with what the proctors had written down during the experiment.

The three kids, who sat together at a table, started the evening by doing a blindfold "demonstration." But only one kid at a time was blindfolded. Not surprisingly, all the kids got the blindfold guesses correct. I'm pretty sure they didn't peek below their nose, though they could have above it because they held the cards up high in the air to indicate that they were ready to announce their guess.

But I and two other proctors, who both had experience in magic and statistics, felt that the kids were cluing each other (the third proctor admitted the possibility but did not care to guess). All in the room could see the card except the blindfolded kid. The kids were fairly close to one another and they were allowed to move about and talk when the other of them was blindfolded. I have suggested to the main researcher, who is unaffiliated with the Korean Institute for Brain Science (KIBS), ways that we can check this. Somehow, and you'll be shocked to learn this, but somehow they are not interested in finding out if the kids are cheating!

The main trial then began. Each kid had a separate proctor, and I watched from the sidelines. It was a very fair experiment, with the kid taking up to 20 minutes to guess, then announcing his guess in English, the proctor repeated the guess, the kid confirm!ed it loud enough for all to hear, the proctor wrote down the guess then checked the envelope for holes or tears, then the proctor opened it and wrote down the actual color. They never found any holes and so on, though one kid's envelopes were consistently wet as if he tried to lick them (the paper was too thick to allow him to see anything, even so); the dampness could also have been sweat as the kid held the cards to his face tightly.

Again, I'm poorly informed, Matt. Who supplied the cards? How many different colors? What size were they, etc.?

Gist is that one kid did 7 trials, the other two did 6 each then the experiment was stopped out of concern for the kids' anxiety. They were scheduled to do 12 trials each. They got 4 hits during these 19 trials, right what chance would predict (kid one got 1, kid two got 1, kid three got 2).

At this point, the oldest kid (15 years old) wanted to do another blindfold demonstration. Same as before: he got both new cards right. It was then suggested that all three kids be blindfolded at once, and that, respectfully, no noise be made. I didn't love this idea because there were many other people in the room who could have cheated if they wanted to, but the audience insisted on it. Only kids two and three attempted a reading, but kid one was blindfolded anyway. Whereas before, each kid could do a blindfold experiment in about a minute, this time it took about five to seven minutes until kid number three started to complain of a stomachache. And so, even the last blindfold demonstration was called off with no guesses made.

The evening ended with the main experimenter (Dr. Lee) saying that, "Absence of evidence...", hoping that more trials would be done, that none of us really understood what is going on, and with the head of the KIBS saying, through an interpreter, something about "mysterious Z-rays that are absorbed or emitted by the human brain."

So it is now, of course, two days later that the recriminations and alternative explanations begin. The group has told me that will continue to practice very hard with the envelopes and will try the experiment again. It's not clear whether I and the proctors will be allowed to witness it.

I also suggested to them that if they truly get as good as they say they can, that they contact you to win that million bucks. No bites on that yet.

We, Dr. Lee and I, plan to write these results up, though I don't know where to submit them. Before the experiment I was told that I would be allowed to write whatever I wanted and that if I could not then I would write my own paper.

I've left out a lot of details but I have already gone on too long. Thank you for your patience and for the interest. You are a great hero of mine and if I did this experiment right it was because I tried to pay close attention to what you have done before.

Matt, sympathetic as I am to your situation, you let the kids run away with the situation. That doesn't happen when I get going on such a test. For example, I just spent the last two days here in Würzburg testing "psychics," and it never once got out of hand. A full report will be forthcoming as soon as I'm back in the States. Those tests were for the million-dollar JREF prize, and I'll be doing others while I'm over here....

The Brain Respiration gang's Power Brain is a steal at $90. Check out the $4000+ Healing Turtle! It has the "greatest healing energy of all the healing products." I suppose it's just a coincidence it's the most expensive too. And Healing Turtle has great Feng Shui too! Why do people stick up liquor stores and go to jail when this sort of crime is so much easier?

A NEW MOON

In the 1970s the "Moonies" emerged as a still-growing cult following the bizarre ideas of Reverend Sun Myung Moon, who founded the Unification Church. Moon has now moved far beyond that humble beginning to become the friend of presidents, to own the Washington Times, and to flaunt his status as a multi-billionaire — despite his IRS conviction and the resulting 13-month vacation in federal prison in 1984.

Well, there's a new Moon on the horizon, with an organization boasting centers in Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Northern California, Texas, and Virginia. His name is Ilchi Lee, aka Seung Heun Lee, founder of Dahn Centers and many other organizations. And he espouses "Brain Respiration," whatever that may be.

His "spiritual name" Ilchi literally means "a finger pointing to the truth," we're told. I have to wonder which finger is being referred to....

Lee's group claims that it's here to "save the world" through "energy" and "healing." This is supposedly done by "sharing love with the world." Lee, not about to ignore one of the tired old favorite canards of the mystics — that humans only use 10% of their brains — says:

I say "find the 90%!" I mean take control of the 90% of your brain that you are still not using. The aim of the development of our brain lies in the installation of Peace. Enlightenment has no meaning if it does not contribute to peace, health and happiness. So where does enlightenment occur? It occurs in our brain. I was struggling to find that answer for twenty years, and the result is Brain Respiration and HSP.

("HSP" is "Heightened Somato-Sensory Perception," in case you're not up on the latest claptrap.)

he "Ilchi Center for Brain Research" sells products such as necklaces and bracelets that they say "help energy flow," a $90 "power brain," and a "portable brain energizer" in the form of a spongy, yellow lump that vibrates and fits in one's palm. Lee preaches that at first, he just "transfers cosmic energy to people." New students have "aura pictures" taken, and they get an "energy checkup" before their "individualized training plan" is created for them. And, Lee has established "Peaceology for Earth Humans," all a part of the huggy, lovey, vague, dreamy, and juvenile atmosphere in which the naﶥ and desperate become so easily trapped and submerged.

Lee claims that his center studies the brain, "Brain Respiration," and HSP "in conjunction with the Korea Brain Research Institute, University of California, Harvard Medical Department, and Cornell Medical Department." Frankly, I doubt that claim. Perhaps some readers may care to ask Harvard and Cornell if they are associated with Lee? It appears that he did lecture for the Harvard school of Divinity, but that does not indicate any "association" of Harvard with his eccentric notions. On his website, we read that the University of California at Irvine's Center for Brain Aging and Dementia is specifically studying his methodology. Not so, says the director there, Dr. Carl Cotman: "We do not endorse him. At all."

This is another of those Moonie-like schemes in which "students'" are encouraged to leave their families and work for only room and board, proselytizing others constantly and worshipping their guru. Many of the victims awaken before they drown in this syrup of nonsense-and-hype, but those who don't either drop out or suicide, grow older and poorer by the day — both financially and emotionally. But it's safe from government interference; that veteran of scam Reverend Moon is living proof of this country's protection and support of such quackery.

Sheldon W. Helms, Department of Psychology at Ohlone College in Fremont, California, made an inquiry about one of the claims made by scam-artist Ilchi Lee of academic support from Weill Cornell Medical College (see www.randi.org/jr/111904the.html#7) and had this response from Sean Kelliher, of the college Public Affairs department:

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. "Brain Respiration" is not associated with Weill Cornell Medical College. After our issuing a verbal "cease and desist" order, they have removed the reference to WC from their website. Again, thanks for your help.

Continuing to check out Lee's claims, we managed to contact Dr. Joseph Ingelfinger - who had also been cited by Lee — to find out if he had, in fact, researched Brain Respiration (BR) and found paranormal effects, as Lee had proudly claimed on his website. While Dr. Ingelfinger had told others that he has not researched BR, nor has he personally seen any research evidence of paranormal effects from BR, when I asked him to verify that this was a true statement, he informed me that he now would rather not have any statement of his published. There has to be a reason other than shyness at work here. How much more of Lee's other claims of validation will be found spurious, and what hold does he have over these people?

I was very interested to see that Ilchi Lee has taken his show on the road. As a ten year veteran of life in Korea I am accustomed to seeing posters advertising his system, known here as Dahn Hak, on every street corner. Indeed there are several centers here in my town. I'm very sorry, though hardly surprised, to hear that it's growing over there as well.

As much nonsense as the West can swallow, the East can easily provide. Korea is literally awash in nonsense and credulity. They cherish their myths and legends and no new undertaking is complete without a semi-mystical story to explain its origins. One of my favorites is a system of swordsmanship said to improve mental powers (Hae Dong Gumdo in Korean), clearly borrowed from a similar Japanese style that has been widely known for years, that the founder here claimed it's based on the secret techniques taught to him by a mysterious traveler named Baek Doo San who lived in and wandered about the mountains of Korea. Strangely, the name of the alleged traveling sword master, Baek Doo San, is also the name of a revered mountain in North Korea. So when did they romantic event occur, 16th century? Yi Dynasty? Nope. Sometime since the 1980's judging by the relatively young age of the founder.

Laughably, anyone who has spent any time in modern Korea knows how absurd the idea of traveling sword masters and itinerant warrior monks is. This is a thoroughly modernized, high tech society in the same vein as Japan or the U.S. Sadly, many westerners are still gullible enough, not to mentioned poorly informed enough, to believe this type of romantic nonsense, and as long as the money keeps coming in we'll continue receiving Dahn Hak, Hae Dong Gumdo, Feng Shui, Oriental Medicine, and a whole lot more. Incidentally, a quick internet search revealed that Hae Dong Gumdo is now international as well.

I could write volumes about the inane beliefs and urban legends that are routinely believed and fiercely defended here. One of my wife's friends, a newlywed, is currently trying to find a "lucky" apartment to move into based on the advice of a fortune teller who told her that only apartments whose names begin with a certain letter will ensure a happy and prosperous marriage. She paid a pretty penny for this startling insight into the workings of the cosmos and now finds herself and her husband commuting an hour each way to work as a result. But it's a small price to pay for luck.

To try to put into perspective just how awash this place is in credulity and wishful thinking, seven of the world's ten largest protestant churches are here in Korea. 'Nuff said. And to all the silly westerners looking for answers in Asia, remember that there is truly nothing new under the Sun. There are no magical answers or powers here, anymore than there are at home.

Richard, I am regularly asked if some countries are more superstitious or pseudoscience-oriented than others, and my answer is that it's similar to the different kinds of cuisine that are found around the world. Though the flavors and style of serving are different, the language and costumes vary, and the table manners may be dissimilar, food is still food. Before I went to Korea on my last trip, I was assured that I'd find very different sorts of paranormal and supernatural claims there. Not at all to my surprise, I found quite the same scams, methods, tricks, gibberish, and delusions there as I'd found in many other cultures.

Next week, some news about Ilchi Lee's and "Brain Respiration's" claimed references and endorsements....

Brain sensitizing

• Generally, I don't go for the little guys. But when the seventh copy of the Brain Respiration leaflet arrived in the Bad Science mailbag, I knew it was a serious moneyspinner: a multimillion dollar operation, in fact, with four centres in the UK, and headed by spiritual leader Dr Ilchi Lee, who runs international conferences, attended, he claims, by Al Gore. I don't know if his doctorate is in neurosciences but he's certainly made some breakthroughs with his "brain sensitising, brain versatilising, brain cleansing, brain re-wiring, and brain mastering ". Especially since it can "refresh the brain's energy and help it create new brain cells for stronger brain function", which is amazing given the conventional wisdom that you don't make any new brain cells after you're born. So you might want to protect the few you have left from brain respiration, especially since "this process goes beyond the anatomical layer of the neo-cortex ... into the realm of the brain stem (where innate universal awareness is present)... the creativity of the neo-cortex is fully realised through an infinite current of energy". No way is Dr Ilchi Lee putting an infinite current of energy through my neurons, but he can send me some of those cool brain-shaped gold vibrators off his website for only $90. They're top of my Christmas list.

• So is there any peer-reviewed journal evidence to back up Brain Respiration? Yes! It's from the Korea Institute of Brain Sciences (proprietor Dr Ilchi Lee), and it's published in the American Journal of Chinese Medicine. It measured the EEG of children meditating (in the special brain respiration way), and found that meditating kids had EEG findings characteristic of meditation, when compared with a bunch of kids just sitting "relaxing" with some electrodes on their heads, presumably baffled, certainly not meditating, and therefore producing EEG recordings characteristic of kids sitting around in a room. Which goes to show the import!ance of choosing your control group carefully. There is another paper, which claims to show the effect of brain respiration on stress hormones, but it's only published in the Korea Institute of Brain Sciences journal, which, little surprise, isn't carried by my usual academic libraries.

• Just to clarify: meditation is good, Herbert Benson's excellent papers on the Relaxation Response, the opposite of fight-or-flight, absolutely rule, and you miss out at your peril. But trademarked pseudoscientific nonsense meditation schools are bad, just like all the other backdoors to enlightenment.

Guardian Reporter Unquestioningly Promotes Cult Therapy

Nearly half of the Guardian's health pages are devoted to a ringing endorsement of the money-spinning cult of "Brain Respiration," printed under a headline simply saying "It works ...!" Reporter Clint Witchalls (who "couldn't believe the results," according to the subhead) drops any pretence of journalistic inquiry, pathetically swallowing whole and without question the assertions of the promoters.

Witchalls, an admitted sufferer from obsessive health anxiety, and therefore a perfect dupe for practitioners of pseudoscientific treatments, thinks that the "magic" programme - which he believes is based on "a 10,000 year old [i.e., mesolithic] Korean mind-body discipline" - should be offered in British schools, but finds it difficult say what the therapy actually is, except to quote from promotional brochures:

"Brain Respiration (BR) is a revolutionary holistic training system that enables participants to awaken and use 100% of their brain potential."

Conceding that this is virtually meaningless, Mr. Witchalls opines that "perhaps it is best to describe BR in terms of its benefits," which he uncritically lists as fact, without so much as a single 'reputed' or 'claimed':

"improved concentration, better stress management, enhanced creativity and self-confidence, character development, harmonious social relationships, and better information processing skills."

Actually, this list is rather tame, as Witchalls unaccountably neglects to include another benefit of BR - the ability to "read the words at the back of [a] book while simply looking at the cover," a talent rather more impressive than "better information processing."

Clint discovered how all of this is achieved in a morning introductory session, in which he "unblocked my blocked meridians" by the simple expedient of slapping his "dantien" (located just below the navel) while shouting "Ha! Ha! Ha!" - all under the watchful gaze of his instructor, "Dr Paul Sumner (a neuroscientist)."

A neuroscientist? Really? How odd that a google for "Dr. Paul Sumner" only generates three matches - a geographer, an engineer and an agronomist.’

Googling the founder of this movement, Dr. Ilchi Lee (AKA Seung Heun Lee) yields rather more information, although it's rather hard to verify the "clinical pathologist" status that Mr. Witchalls bestows upon him. Oh wait - here it is, from the official biography on the Brain Respiration site:

"Dr. Ilchi Lee majored in Clinical Pathology in college, in addition to gaining degrees in Physical Education and Oriental Medicine."

Unfortunately, this is the only information provided as to "Dr." Lee's formal education, so we're rather left in the dark as to how he achieved that title, and in what discipline. What seems much clearer is the conclusion that Lee should not be described as a "clinical pathologist." Even the BR site doesn't do so, claiming that the good doctor, the "President of World Earth Human Alliance for Peace," is "perhaps best characterized as the world's first and foremost activist for 'Brain - Based Peace Movement [sic]."

Undoubtedly the most shameless section of Mr. Witchalls' article - which contains nothing whatsoever that could remotely be seen as critical - deals with the "scientific scrutiny" that Lee is supposedly so "keen to subject the system to." Clint states that an unspecified "number" of "independent studies" have been published in "peer-reviewed science journals," and cites two of them.

Readers can't help but find it unfortunate that Mr. Witchalls isn't a regular reader of Ben Goldacre's excellent "Bad Science," also in the Guardian. If he were, he might have noted Goldacre's October column on Brain Respiration, which points out that the two studies he cites, far from being "independent," were both conducted by Lee's own institute. One of the "peer-reviewed science journals" that published the studies was the American Journal of Chinese Medicine, the other (unnamed by Witchalls) is the house journal of Lee's own Korea Institute of Brain Sciences.

So much for the scientific evidence, and so much for Mr. Witchalls' being taken seriously as a health journalist.

UPDATE: These accounts, purportedly from people with first-hand experience with Lee's group, are well worth reading. Much more information here. Pretty sinister, if true.

Posted by: Lorie Anderson(주;이승헌씨의 거짓말을 찾아다니면서 증명해 보이시는분임) at Dec 11, 2004 11:31:03 PM

I'd like to clear something up about Dahnhak and I intend to do it in an unbiased way!

Dahnhak or Dahn Yoga presents itself as a spiritual business, using yoga, qi gong, meditation, etc. to promote health happiness and peace. While it is true that the kind of yoga and other healthy practices that they teach are in fact very good for you, and while it is true that many people have benefited from this organization and experienced a more healthy physical, mental, and emotional state; it is also equally true that this organization fits perfectly with the definition of a cult.

Now you might wonder, how can this be a cult, if so many people are benefiting from it? If you have been a member at one of their centers, you might have experienced "masters" there who are extremely wonderful and genuine human beings. As a member, I myself experienced a lot of personal growth through my training with Dahn. I also opened up new sensation levels within my body to the point where I could actually feel ki-energy. I loved it and loved the people I was meeting through it. So if all of this is true, how can it be a cult? Aren't cults supposed to be bad and destructive and dangerous? If you have read any of Ilchi Lee's books, you will find that they all make a lot of sense and that there is no trace of a sinister plot behind them.

Why then, are there so many people on the internet and in the news (CBS recently aired very negative segments about Dahn in Boston and New York) calling Dahn a dangerous cult? Is it just sensationalism?

Here is the definition of a cult: A religion or religious sect generally considered extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader... The followers of such a religion or sect... A system or community of religious worship and ritual... Obsessive, especially faddish, devotion to or veneration for a person, principle, or thing.

Firstly, let’s make something clear: members who take these yoga classes are initially not exposed to any of the cult aspects of the organization; and here in lies the beginning of Dahn's deception and lies. Usually, a prospective member is brought in for an initial energy checkup or healing session and is either told their body is not in good condition, or they have too much stress, or they need to relax and learn how to breathe, or that their energy circulation is bad etc. A new member is simply told that this exercise system is for their benefit and health. Then they give you either a massage or practice some exercizes with you and take you outside to drop the bomb on you, a hefty price for membership which in most people's opinions is much too high. But, they tell you that it is for your health, which is priceless, and that it is more personalized than other yoga places. You might sign up and stay as a member for a year or even two without even suspecting or hearing anything about this being a cult.

Here is the reason why: Dahnhak intentionally deceives people by not sharing any of their cultish religious beliefs or practices with you, unless you are being targeted as someone who might give up their current life to become a "master" within the organization. This is why so many people cannot believe that this is a cult, because they are very good at hiding it; although some hide it better than others.

If you ask a master, "what does it mean to be a Dahn master." They will tell you that a master simply means someone who is a full time instructor who is committed to helping themselves and others become healthier and grow spiritually. Or, that a master is someone who has attained a high level of spiritual growth within the organization. They might even admit to you that Ilchi Lee is their spiritual leader; after all, he is the grand master of the organization. But they will certainly not tell you that they have religious beliefs, in fact they claim that they are anti-religion and want to make spirituality a part of every day life.

While this is all true on a very superficial level, this is what it really means to be a Dahn master: A Dahn Master is someone who has gone through a special certification program. This is the mastership program: a militaristic training that forced them to the edges of physical exertion, and also forced them to expose to others in the training their inner most emotional traumas and secrets, and forced to scream as loud as they can that they want peace for hours, forced to hold difficult physical positions for hours, and then at the end of the long ordeal which lasts for many days, they are told that if their true self wants peace and wants to heal the world, they should pledge themselves to Dahnhak and Ilchi Lee. But, this pledge comes with a high price. These would-be masters, after what most would consider to be a traumatic experience lasting many days, sometimes weeks outside of the real world, are then asked to devout their lives to the service of Dahn and Dahn's Vision.

Dahn Master’s belief system and religious practices include the belief that when they die, Ilchi Lee will meet their souls at Bell Rock and guide them to another dimension, their “home” or star of origin. They believe that Ilchi Lee is a reincarnated Buddha and that he is on the same level as Jesus Christ (or better in some Master’s opinions). They are forced to mentally “connect” themselves to Ilchi Lee in every moment of the day, claiming that he is one with the source of heavenly divine energy that can heal the whole planet. They are continually told they are sinners and must keep purifying themselves to be worthy of Dahn’s Vision. They are forced to give up their “old lives” and friends and told that their soul does not need to experience worldly things anymore, but to serve a mystical force called Chun-Ji-Ki-Un (which they are told is synonymous with Ilchi Lee). They are forced to STOP THINKING and told that questioning the group or Ilchi Lee is bad for their energy.

For these reasons, and many more, you should consider staying away from this group. A woman died during the master training of dehydration. She was forced to hike up a mountain in the dessert without enough water with a bag filled with heavy rocks that supposedly represented her/their vision to prove her commitment to the organization.

Why does Ilchi Lee do this? Money, power, greed? I do not pretend to know. Why do people willingly give up their lives (mostly younger people who think there is no other way to achieve peace in the world besides this group)? Probably because they were lied to and influenced by the groups powerful mind control techniques. Many other people have left the organization because we found out what is really behind Dahn. Dahn Masters claim that people who left were just “not ready” to grow, but this is just a lie. They left because they found out the truth, that Dahn is in fact a dangerous deceptive cult that takes advantage of people seeking spirituality and using them to grow in numbers and wealth.

I said in the beginning of this post that I wanted to be unbiased, and I believe I have. It is true that although this is a cult, some people actually get a great benefit from it; but now you know what is actually going on behind the scenes.
